A family relocating for a job at Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane called my office a few years back. They had never been to Indiana. By the time they called, they had already decided on Bloomington, sight unseen. They did not know Bedford was an option. That is not a rare situation. It happens more than people think.

Someone researching a move to south-central Indiana for a new job typically starts with whichever name comes up first, in a search engine, on a map, or in a conversation with a recruiter. For most employers in this region, that name is Bloomington. Bedford, the Lawrence County seat about 24 miles south of Bloomington by way of State Route 37, rarely comes up unless someone already knows to go looking for it (Distance-cities.com).

That is not a knock on Bloomington. It is just how relocation research tends to work when you have never set foot in a place. You search the biggest name, you find housing near it, and you never learn there was a second option twenty-some minutes down the highway.
