Bedford, Indiana and NSWC Crane: What Defense Employees Should Know Before Relocating

July 09, 20263 min read

A lot of the buyers I talk to about Bedford are curious for the same general reasons. Lower prices, more land, a slower pace than Bloomington. But there is one driver behind a good chunk of that interest that does not get talked about enough on its own, and that is Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane.

NSWC Crane is one of Indiana's largest high tech employers, with more than 3,800 people working across electronic warfare, strategic missions, and expeditionary warfare engineering, according to the base's own workforce figures. About 2,500 of those employees are scientists, engineers, and technicians. The installation itself sits mostly in Martin County, with the surrounding footprint reaching into Greene and Lawrence counties, and it is recognized as the third largest naval installation in the world by land area, per Wikipedia's summary of the base.

How Far Is Bedford From NSWC Crane?

Bedford sits about 37 miles from Crane by way of SR 54, which runs somewhere around 45 minutes door to door depending on where in Lawrence County you land, according to standard mileage calculations for the route. That is a real commute, not a short hop, but it is a familiar one for anyone who already works shift or rotating schedules at the base. A number of Crane employees and contractors choose to live outside Martin County entirely and commute in from Bedford, Bloomfield, or Odon, largely because housing dollars stretch further the moment you leave the immediate base area.

Bloomington is closer to Crane in a straight comparison, roughly 25 miles by the most direct routes, so buyers who want the shortest possible drive often land there first. But once you factor in price per square foot and lot size, a good number of Crane families decide the extra minutes on SR 54 are worth what they get in Bedford.

What Does This Mean for Bedford's Housing Market?

Lawrence County has quietly become part of the broader defense and technology corridor built up around Crane. Radius Indiana points to the WestGate and EastGate technology parks, the EastGate site sitting in Bedford itself, as part of a growing cluster of microelectronics and hypersonics work tied directly to Crane's mission. That kind of investment tends to bring steady, well paid jobs into a county, and steady jobs bring buyers who are ready to close.

I wrote about why Bloomington buyers are looking at Bedford right now a few weeks back, and the Crane connection is a piece of that story that deserves its own space. Defense contractors and federal employees tend to be organized buyers. They know their timelines, they usually have financing squared away early, and they are comparing Bedford against Bloomington on hard numbers rather than sentiment. If cost is the deciding factor for you, the real cost of living in Bedford lays out what that comparison looks like.

Is Bedford Worth It If You Work at Crane?

For some employees, no. If you want the shortest commute available and you are not concerned with price per square foot, staying closer to the base or choosing Bloomington will make more sense. But for buyers who want a bigger yard, a lower price point, and a genuine sense of place rather than a bedroom community built around the base, Bedford holds up well. I covered what daily life there looks like in the first piece in this series, and the Crane connection is one more reason that list of buyers keeps growing.

If you are relocating for Crane, or you support it as a contractor and you are trying to figure out whether Bedford makes sense for your commute and your budget, reach out. I can walk you through what is available and what the drive feels like on a normal week, not just a map estimate.

I work with buyers and sellers across Bloomington, Bedford, Ellettsville, and the surrounding south-central Indiana communities. Some are downsizing. Some are relocating for work at Cook, Novo Nordisk, IU, or Crane. Some are parents buying a place for their student at IU. Some are first-time buyers trying to figure out where to start. What they have in common is they want a straight answer and a plan that fits their situation, not a sales pitch. 20+ years in this market. JD/MBA.
