Bloomington in Winter – Outdoor Snow Adventures

Experience Bloomington in Winter: Outdoor Activities

November 20, 20251 min read

Looking for ways to embrace the snowy season? Bloomington offers plenty of outdoor activities that make winter fun and memorable.

Sledding & Skiing

Popular sledding spots include the hills near Tri‑North Middle School and the Indiana University Sailing Club on Lake Lemon — just don’t forget to bring your own sled! For cross‑country skiing and snowshoeing, the rolling terrain at Karst Farm Park, Cascades Golf Course, and the IU Golf Course is ideal. Indiana’s DNR State Parks also host annual First Day Hikes, no matter the weather. At Fairfax, participants can choose between a 3.7‑mile or 1.3‑mile trail, followed by appetizers and prize drawings at Fourwinds Lakeside Inn and Marina. For longer skiing adventures, the Bloomington Rail Trail and Clear Creek Trail offer 4.4 miles of scenic paths, while the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area and Morgan‑Monroe State Forest provide more rugged terrain for thrill‑seekers.

Hiking & Wildlife

Winter in Bloomington is also the perfect time to spot bald eagles at Monroe Lake, where the Indiana Department of Natural Resources began restoration efforts in 1985. Over five years, 73 eaglets were released, and by 2008 the state surpassed its goal of 50 nesting pairs, leading to the bald eagle’s removal from Indiana’s endangered species list. Golden eagles, though rare, occasionally visit the area too.

For the best chance to see these majestic birds, explore remote trails around Monroe Lake. The Peninsula Trail in the Deam Wilderness Area offers stunning views, while the Amy Weingartner Branigin Peninsula Preserve, managed by the Sycamore Land Trust, provides guided hikes, stargazing, and nature programs year‑round near the Payne town State Recreation Area.

I work with buyers and sellers across Bloomington, Bedford, Ellettsville, and the surrounding south-central Indiana communities. Some are downsizing. Some are relocating for work at Cook, Novo Nordisk, IU, or Crane. Some are parents buying a place for their student at IU. Some are first-time buyers trying to figure out where to start. What they have in common is they want a straight answer and a plan that fits their situation, not a sales pitch. 20+ years in this market. JD/MBA.
